What our Volunteers Say ...

Over the year we have had the honour of working with many wonderful individuals. While we can't say enough about them, here's what a few of them have to say about us ...

"When the opportunity arose through Correctional Services Canada where I work, to attend a photo shoot with the Commissioner of Corrections, I thought it would be a good opportunity to take a look see at what Habitat was all about.

From my very first visit to the 2005 Montreal Street build site, I knew that I wanted to be part of this organization.  The volunteers and Habitat staff were friendly, helpful and genuinely committed to their cause.  I saw my involvement with Habitat as an opportunity to work with committed individuals who were there giving their time and skills in a positive, caring and friendly manner.

I have always had a personal interest in residential construction.  I designed and sub-contracted out the construction of my own home in 2000 and it was a great experience.  As a trained Architectural Technician I have the skill set to understand the house building process and over the years I have gained a lot of hands-on experience in residential construction.

I am thoroughly enjoying my limited involvement with Habitat and I hope to expand my contributions in the future as I move closer to retirement age."

"To have the privilege of working along side the Habitat families is deeply meaningful. You see hope become tangible and it changes your life forever.”

"Hi, my name is Bill Dobson and I have been volunteering with Habitat Kingston since my wife and I moved here in 2000. I have seen the affiliate grow from a very grassroots level (15 or 20 volunteers, with one house completed) to the amazing organization it is today. I remember sitting around a director’s kitchen table, where during our “Board” meetings we joked that anybody with a pulse was welcome.

I can’t put into words the feeling of gratitude, accomplishment, and a connection to my new community that I have had and continue to have with Kingston and Habitat.

We have worked through many problems and difficulties but the organization has found: families, land, partners, money, and most importantly volunteers to getting us to five houses completed, one more to be built this year and many more to come.”

"What HFH means to me....hmm...

Well Habitat for Humanity is an organization that looks out for the general well being of society. It allows people to contribute in multiple different ways despite economic status.

But what attracted me to Habitat was the people that continuously give their time to help others. It seems that HFH attracts a certain kind of person. One that is eager to make an effort to build the community. Habitat for Humanity gives those people the opportunity to make a difference, even in the smallest form of contribution.

....well...that took a lot more thinking than one would
expect :P"

I volunteered in New Brunswick with the United Way as secretary of the board. As part of a fundraising project, we procured land, built a cottage and sold raffle tickets. I remember the lady who won the cottage; you would think she had won a million dollars. She was a senior lady with one thought in mind. If she could sell the cottage, she could afford a new roof for her modest home. It drove home for me this thought: though this lady lived on a limited income, in a very modest house that was in need of repair, it still was her home. It felt so good to help this lady improve her home and further enjoy her kingdom.

When I saw that Habitat for Humanity was looking for volunteers, I knew this was a place that I could help other people acquire a home and enjoy a kingdom of their own. We have many volunteers who help achieve this goal and I enjoy being part of this team. I would encourage anyone who has time to spare, get involved and help Habitat for Humanity build homes for those that need a helping hand up, not a hand out.

My first hands-on Habitat for Humanity experience dates back some 10 years when, with an Elderhostel group, I participated in building a Habitat house in Americus, Georgia. During that week, spent where Habitat’s International Headquarters are located, I learned much about the values as well as its international outreach which are the basis of this housing ministry (Canada, in 1985, became the first country to join the Habitat for Humanity movement which had its beginning in 1976).

Ever since that first exposure to what Habitat for Humanity is all about I have been a strong supporter of this organization because of its commitment to making it possible for people of lesser means to live in their own simple, affordable house.

Several years ago, with many hundreds of volunteers, I helped build 10 houses in 5 days when the Ed Schreyer Habitat Blitz Build took place in Halifax. In 2001, with a group of almost only women, I was part of a “Women Build” near Owen Sound.

Since January of this year when first I heard about “Alcan Builds on Recycling” I have contacted numerous schools, agencies, institutions and businesses here in Kingston, where I now regularly collect bags and bags of empty pop cans which I then take to the ReStore on Bath Road.

This year I want to volunteer, 75 years old that I am, in the 2007 Build where I will be using some of the skills acquired in those earlier builds in which I participated.
