Women Build

Women Build is about women who build or who have always wanted to build. It is about spirit, fun, learning, and a whole lot of pride in working with a family to build a place they can call home.

Although Habitat Kingston does not have a Women Build
project planned (yet!), we do send a hearty wave and BIG hug our sisters at
Habitat Northumberland (Coburg) and
Habitat National Capital Region (Ottawa)
who are undertaking projects in 2007.

Kingston in Cobourg

In July, a small group of women from Habitat Kingston ventured west to help and learn from their sisters-in-spirit ...

Habitat Northumberland (more affectionately known as Cobourg) has a unique, long term project underway - renovating an entire street of houses!  Originally Armed Forces residences, the buildings and land had been purchased by the City of Cobourg when no longer needed.  Not being very interested in maintaining an entire street of older homes, the City was happy to sell the lot to Habitat Northumberland for a very reasonable price.

The homes vary in design, but not in heart and soul.  The street is lined with fully grown trees that shade wonderfully colourful gardens. Children glide by on bicycles and friendly neighbours wave to passers by.  It seems like a dream Habitat community.

Although we arrived a bit late, the Kingston team was eager to get to work. Hats firmly planted on our heads and hammers in hand, we scampered up the scaffolding in the front and began banging nails in.

While our intentions were honourable, we didn't accomplish quite as much as we'd hoped ... for reasons that don't usually occur on the average construction site.

Bill, the feisty-yet-fun team leader, had brought his Labrador puppy Maggie to the site for the day.  It was impossible to resist those big brown eyes.

In the morning a reporter from CHEX-TV in Peterborough arrived to gather footage on the project.

.

Later, a crew from MTV-Canada showed up with a viewer who had won a chance to appear with her favourite VJ and learn a bit about volunteering for Habitat.

In spite of everything, significant progress was made on the building that day, and bonds between Habitats were strengthened.

Thanks so much to everyone
at Habitat Northumberland for the wonderful experience!!!

Please note that while Sandy and Steph are admittedly shod in
their 'safety flop-flops', their prettily painted toes are outside the
official construction zone.
