Iqaluit (Inuktituk for 'place of many fish') is located in the southeast part of Baffin Island, overlooking Koojesse Inlet (formerly known as Frobisher Bay).

Iqaluit was first settled in 1914, as a trading post.

In 1941, the US Air Force built a weather station in order to aid trans-Atlantic flight planning. This was followed by a large air-base used to refuel aircraft. After WWII, the Canadian government purchased the base.

In 1995, Iqaluit was selected to be the Capital of Nunavut.  The decision became official in 1999.
