Build 2008

Build 2008 Underway!!!

Volunteers Help Build

If you would like to volunteer for the 2008 Build, please complete a Volunteer Application form online or print one out and bring/email it to the Coordinator of Volunteers - volunteer@habitatkingston.com .

In previous years, hundreds of volunteers responded to our call for help with enthusiasm and generosity. Being part of a Habitat for Humanity Build is a special, memorable, and rewarding experience. However, for safety reasons there are limits to the number of workers we can have on the build site each day. And we have to allow time and space for the trades people to do their very important work on the houses as well. So this year, as in past years, there will be a limited number of volunteer openings and we can not guarantee that we will be able to accommodate every volunteer applicant.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

Specific Volunteer Needs ...

Building a home takes a lot more than just sawing and hammering!

REGISTRATION AND VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE
On a Habitat Build site, the comfort, health and safety of our volunteers is of paramount importance. Because of this we engage a crew of two or more volunteers whose sole job it is to make sure that construction volunteers have what they need when they need it. Specific duties include welcoming and registering volunteers as they arrive, making sure that everyone has the necessary personal protection equipment, keeping track of tools and materials, and making sure everyone is well hydrated.

FOOD SERVICE
On Corporate Build Team Days* extra people will be needed to handle lunch pick-up, serving and clean-up for about 2 hours from 11:30a to 1:30p.
ALSO, refreshing liquids and power-boosting treats are always appreciated!  If you would like to donate beverages and snacks, please contact us!

Build Volunteers are expected to provide many of their own basic tools.
Basic Tool List includes: tool belt, hammer, measuring tape, work gloves, carpenters pencil and bandanna.

All volunteers must abide by provincial and federal safety standards. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older and wear CSA approved safety boots. Habitat Kingston has a selection of gently used boots available for loan.

Building Homes. Building Hope.
Building Green ...

At Habitat Kingston, we believe that our mission to unite Kingstonians around the cause of decent, affordable housing for everyone is inextricably linked to the need to support safe, healthy communities and a sustainable environment.

Why Build Green?

Low-income families may spend up to 17% of their total income on energy to operate their homes Simple energy efficient improvements can cut costs by over 40% in most affordable housing.

An EnergyStar® qualified new home is 30-40% more energy efficient than those built to minimum Ontario Building Code standards The money that families save on energy can help them to make mortgage payments, pay for food, clothing and other essentials Energy savings are based on heating, cooling, and hot water energy use and are typically achieved through a combination of:

  • Building envelope upgrades
  • High performance windows
  • Controlled air infiltration
  • Upgraded heating and air conditioning systems
  • Tight duct systems
  • Upgraded water-heating equipment

EnergyStar® also encourages the use of energy-efficient lighting and appliances, as well as features designed to improve indoor air quality.

We seek to be a model green builder in the affordable housing industry, and an advocacy leader in the growing green building movement.
