Gingerbread Build 2006

by Donna Voss

Habitat for Humanity Kingston’s third annual gingerbread house building competition was a grand success. Many returning and new sponsors created spectacular fantasy gingerbread homes. Many were replicas of existing buildings in the Kingston area and the attention to detail was mind boggling.

The children enjoyed a colouring contest, cookie decorating and a visit from Santa and the elves. As the train whistled joyously throughout the village, there was music, candy canes and cookies for all. Spectators consumed hot chocolate as they wandered around trying to decide their favourite gingerbread house.

Mortgage Intelligence was chosen as the people’s choice and received the People’s Choice Hammer award for its ‘Festive Décor’ (top right). Other prizes were determined by a panel of judges. A lot of thought and hushed discussion went on before the judges declared Ontario Realty Corp. with the Wolfe Islander (bottom) as first place and Assurant Solutions with The Good Ship, Jolly Santa as second place (top left).

A silent auction to purchase all the homes completed the fun filled weekend. Many happy families left with tasty creations to be enjoyed for the rest of the holiday season. It was gratifying for Habitat for Humanity Kingston to construct the gingerbread village and the sponsors had fun creating the wondrous gingerbread homes.

The proceeds raised from this festive event will help families enjoy their own homes next Christmas.

Please join us next year!

Each house consists of six 16” by 16” pieces of gingerbread, which are provided to teams by Bread & Butter Bakery with their entry fee of $250.

From there, the creativity of the groups takes over! Groups or companies can enter and build their own house, or they can elect to sponsor a house but have other teams build it for them.

“We hope to have many returning and new sponsors to have even more houses this year” says Berg.

While the primary purpose is to support Habitat Kingston, teams are also competing for the coveted “Gingerbread Hammer Award” and the “People’s Choice Award”.

The Gingerbread event makes a great outing for families during the festive holiday season. People can drop by and enjoy a warm beverage as they view the creations, and bid on the houses in a silent auction. Kids can enjoy a visit from Santa and his elves, decorate their own festive cookie, and take part in a colouring contest.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Funds are raised through entry fees, the silent auction, and donations from the community. All proceeds go towards Habitat Kingston Builds. Mark the date and come on out to help us make this event the most successful one yet. Please visit our website www.habitatkingston.com for information on how to enter in the competition and more.
